It all started 54 years ago when condom technology was not
as good as it is now. Another baby DJ was born in Miami, Florida. In fact, right after birth the nurses were heard
to say.....mercy!....and such the hospital was named: Mercy Hospital, still standing in Miami to this day.
South Florida is where the illustrious career of one Jon
Jeffrey (your giant purple eyed soul rabbit annonomous cucumber fumble fingers night time daddy fox) Kay began. It
was 1969 at WINZ, the 50,000 watt blowtorch of Miami, while Neil Armstrong was stepping on the moon, Jon's first radio
were words were muttered: This is WINZ Miami, your Apollo station. Then he promptly went to the bathroom and threw up
and a radio legend (in his own mind) was born!
From there it promptly ran downhill. The first full
time job was at WEDR, the Miami Heavy. The station was on 99.1 and broadcasting in full mono, remember this is 1972
and no one really listened to FM, in fact, it wasn't even in cars at the time. The station played album rock, Jimi
Hendrix, Spooky Tooth, Iron Butterfly, that kinda stuff, and Jon was doing 6 to 10am. One day the station got
new speakers in the studio. Bored, about 9:30 the next morning, Jon wanted to know how the speakers would sound with
some real music coming through them so he played Sugar Sugar by the Archies. The speakers sounded great! It was
Jon's last show on WEDR.
From there it was a variety of gigs including stops in New
Orleans, Biloxi, Columbus, Washington D.C., Norfolk and Birmingham.
Eventually, decades later, Super Kay as he became known,
landed in Dunnellon and had stops on WXCV, WXOF and WTRS and finally WIFL, WOW 104. After being fired twice at WOW 104,
Jon swore to never do radio again. We really do not know why he is back on the air. Many think it is just to get
free passes to Gatornationals every year, some say it is an ego thing, others say he just loves the business. No one
really knows.
Today Jon enjoys life with his soul mate of 34 years, the
lovely Karen, and his daughter Tinkerbelle (yes that's her name) and the light of her life, Taylor (yes, Kay is a grandparent!)
The rest of the family includes DJ, Jon's big furry cocker (spaniel), Bee Bee, the one eyed wonder Chi wowwa,(I can't spell
it right), the cats, Pixie, Charlie and Lucky and Mr. T, the turtle. Boomer (Usama Bin Boomer) and Taytumblu reside
in lovely Lakeland with Tinker and Taylor. Thank goodness since Casa Kay is pretty full. .
